About Moriyama City

Located on the southeastern shore of Lake Biwa, this town is located at the eastern foot of the Lake Biwa Bridge. The residential area is large, and it is characterized by many shops, classrooms, and clinics catering to families living nearby.

The proportion of children under 15 is the highest in the prefecture, and more and more people, especially families raising children, are choosing it as a place to live. There are also art museums and leisure facilities along the lakeshore.

Lake Biwa Bridge

Industry

Around Moriyama Station and in residential areas, there are many restaurants, beauty salons, cram schools, lesson classes, and clinics. There are factories in the city, and rice and vegetables are grown in the rice fields that spread out.

Along the lakeshore, restaurants, hotels, and lakeside leisure facilities line the area.

History

Within the city, remains of large settlements from the Yayoi period have been found. The Shimonogo archaeological site with a moated settlement and the Ise archaeological site, where large buildings were planned and constructed, are both designated national historic sites.

During the Edo period, there was a Moriyama post station on the Nakasendo Road, so bustling as a post town for travelers leaving Kyoto, to the point where people stayed at Moriyama after departing Kyoto.

At Omi Myoren Park, you can view the pond of the lotus 'Omi Myoren,' a natural monument of the prefecture that has been passed down since ancient times, from traditional tatami rooms. The flowers bloom from mid-July to mid-August.

Fireflies flying by the water's edge

firefly

Moriyama is known as the town of fireflies. In early summer, fireflies fly along rivers and watersides within the city.

At the Moriyama City Firefly Forest Museum, we introduce how fireflies grow and efforts to protect the waterfront where fireflies live.

Tourism

At the lakeshore Daiichi Nagisa Park, rapeseed flowers bloom in early spring, and across the lake, you can see the Hira mountain range. About 10,000 hydrangeas are planted at Moriyama Ashikari Garden, reaching their peak bloom in June.

The Sagawa Museum of Art, where buildings appear floating on water, is also located in Moriyama City.

Lifestyle

According to the 2025 national census (finalized figure), Moriyama City's population is 84,478. This is an increase of 1,242 people compared to five years ago, making it the second highest growth rate in the prefecture.

It takes about 30 minutes by Special Rapid Service from Moriyama Station to Kyoto Station. Near the station are apartments and new residential areas, while near the lake are rice fields and settlements, so even within the same city, the towns have different atmospheres.

The History of Hotaru Town

Moriyama's fireflies were once almost unseen, but have since been revived.

  1. 1924

Designated as a National Natural Monument

The habitat of the Genji firefly in Moriyama has been designated as a National Natural Monument. According to Moriyama City materials, it is designated as the first National Natural Monument.

    hardly ever seen

Due to water pollution and reduced water sources, the fireflies were nearly wiped out.

  3. 1960

    Removal of Natural Monument Designation

With the firefly gone, the designation as a natural monument was lifted.

  4. Then

    Efforts to Recover

Efforts to reclaim fireflies, including Kiichiro Minami, who continued his research on fireflies, have continued. Currently, at the Moriyama City Firefly Forest Museum, we introduce their history and efforts to protect the waterside where fireflies live.

The town with the highest proportion of children in the prefecture, and families are watching

Moriyama has the highest proportion of children under 15 in the prefecture. When choosing classrooms, clinics, or shops, families raising children check the following on their website.

  1. Fees and Duration

They want to know in advance about things like monthly fees, consultation procedures, and estimated waiting times.

  2. Can you go with children?

It's reassuring to see in photos whether strollers are available or if there are kids' spaces or diaper changing areas.

  3. Pick-up and drop-off and parking

Since many families drive to and from the family, the number and locations of parking spaces are important information to include along with a map.

  4. Can you experience or tour the site?

Many people prefer to experience it first, rather than applying right away. Once you know the schedule and how to apply, it leads to inquiries.

Around Moriyama Station and the lakeside

Moriyama has a lot of shops visited daily by families living nearby, and a lakeside where people from outside the city come on holidays. Depending on which one you choose, what you want to convey on the website will change in advance.

Around Moriyama Station

You can make it

Moriyama is not a town with many overseas tourists, but some visitors come specifically for the Sagawa Museum of Art and lakeside facilities, including those from abroad.

Foreign nationals working at companies or factories in the city may search for shops or classrooms near their homes in English.

Kototsuki Design's website is also available in English and German in addition to Japanese. When creating a shop page, we organize things overseas travelers want to check before heading out, such as directions, how to make reservations, and payment methods.
