Hello, this is Lake and Moon Design.
The question we hear most often from people who want to “try building their own website” or “launch a new site” is, “Which theme should I use?”
While there are now countless WordPress themes available, there are actually only a handful that I can wholeheartedly recommend. These are the ones that successfully balance “user-friendliness that won’t confuse beginners” with “design beauty that even pros will admire.”
In this post, I’ll take a deep dive into three themes that I personally find so impressive I can’t help but marvel at them.
A Little Preparation Before Starting with WordPress
Before choosing a theme, you first need to set up your “land” and “address.”
- Preparation: Rent a server (the “land”) and choose a domain name (the “address”).
- Setup: Install WordPress on the server.
These days, most hosting companies let you get everything set up with just one click of an “Easy Install” button.
Compared to the past, it’s truly a convenient time. However, the ease of managing your site afterward depends heavily on which theme you choose after clicking that button.
Three themes that appeal to me
These are three themes that appeal to me not just because of their sheer number of features, but because of the “philosophy” behind them.
SWELL: “The aesthetics of minimalism set writers free”
It loads quickly, is simple, and easy to use. It’s a theme that effortlessly lowers the psychological barrier to writing.
[Why It’s Recommended for Beginners]
- Intuitive Usability: Even without knowing
complex code, you can create buttons or style headings with a single click. - Minimal
Plugins: Normally, you’d need separate plugins for features like tables of contents or lazy loading of images, but SWELL comes with these built-in. It turns the time you’d spend wondering “What should I install?” into time spent writing.
Here’s the “Professional Perspective”
While many themes add features through “addition,” SWELL is built on the “subtraction” aesthetic of “how to strip away the noise.” The generated code is remarkably clean, which directly translates to faster loading speeds and stronger SEO (search engine optimization).
Snow Monkey: “An infinite well that grants every wish”
It excels in design and makes it easy to build corporate websites and other company sites. It never dismisses your curiosity—your desire to “try something new.” That’s what makes it so reliable.
[Why It’s Recommended for Beginners]
- The Fun
of Building with Blocks: Using the dedicated “Snow Monkey Blocks” plugin, you can create pages by combining parts like pieces of a puzzle. - A Theme That Grows With You
Start simple, then get more complex as you get the hang of it. It offers the peace of mind to expand your site’s expressive capabilities as far as you’re willing to go, in step with your own skill development.
Here’s the “Professional Perspective”
Developer Kitajima’s philosophy isn’t about “delivering a 100% finished product,” but rather about leaving “room” for creators to take it to 120%. It has the depth to adapt to any form—from corporate websites to complex media platforms—depending on the user’s skill level.
Lightning: “An Unwavering Foundation Built on Integrity”
It may not be flashy, but it never lets you down. It represents the “orthodox” approach in the Japanese business world.
[Why It’s Recommended for Beginners]
- Intuitive
Layout: All the “essentials” for a Japanese business website are already in place from the start. You can create a trustworthy site simply by filling in the information—without worrying about the layout. - Reliable Japanese Support Since
the developer is a Japanese company, the official documentation is extremely comprehensive. An environment where questions are resolved immediately is a beginner’s greatest ally.
Here’s the “Professional Perspective”
Lightning’s strength lies in its “robustness.” For websites where glitches are unacceptable—such as those for temples, hospitals, and licensed professionals—the stability of updates and the depth of support provide an irreplaceable sense of security. It’s a theme that functions like a “trusted infrastructure” that’s always meticulously maintained.
Pricing and Subscription Plans for Each Theme
Since this is something you’ll be using for a long time, you’ll want to understand the pricing structure clearly.
Theme Name | Price (Tax Included) | Subscription Type | Notes |
17,600 yen | One-time purchase | No additional fees for updates
16,500 yen / year | Subscription | Support and updates will stop if you cancel your subscription
9,900 yen / year and up | Subscription | A free version is also available. Pro Unit is billed annually |
SWELL: A one-time purchase, a lifelong companion
Pay 17,600 yen once, and there are absolutely no additional costs afterward. Updates are free forever. This straightforward approach—“once you own it, it’s yours forever”—may be the greatest source of peace of mind for first-time users.
Snow Monkey: An annual subscription that supports continuous evolution
This involves an annual payment of 16,500 yen. Think of it as a ticket to consistently receive “the developer’s passion and the latest features.” Since you’ll stop receiving the latest features if you stop renewing, this plan is best suited for those with a proactive mindset who want to stay at the cutting edge.
Lightning: Build Only What You Need
The base theme is free, and when you want more advanced features, you can purchase a plugin called “G3 Pro Unit” starting at 9,900 yen per year. The appeal lies in the ability to take a cautious approach—trying out the free version first and adding “units” as needed.
*Prices are current as of March 2026.
A crucial “locking up” step you mustn’t forget before going live
When you build a house, you lock the doors. It’s the same in the world of the web.
- Set up Basic Authentication for the admin panel Create another “door” before the
login screen. - Use tools like “SiteGuard WP Plugin” to change
the login URL and hide the entry point.
Just these simple steps will drastically reduce the risk of unauthorized access. It’s less about technical details and more about a little “care” to protect what matters most.
Our Philosophy
Now that I’ve introduced some recommended themes, let me conclude by sharing a bit about my “work philosophy.”
“At Lake and Moon Design, we do not accept projects (client work) that are based on existing themes.”
There’s a clear reason for this. Existing themes are like “off-the-rack kimonos” designed to fit everyone. Precisely because they’re made to suit anyone, they inevitably include elements that are “too long” or “excessive embellishments” for the individual.
I place great importance on delving deep into the “roots” of my clients’ businesses and creating a **“custom design”** that is truly suited to their specific region and location. Rather than pouring the project into a pre-prepared mold, I build the code stitch by stitch, from scratch, as if spinning a thread.
While I do find these themes admirable, I want to create a “place of authenticity, tailored exclusively for you.” I believe that this stubborn dedication will lead to a website that feels light and is easy to manage years down the line.
Summary
Choose a theme that suits you and enjoy weaving your story. Or, from the very beginning, work with a professional to take your time and build “your own space.”
There’s no “right” answer here. What matters most, I believe, is whether you can “love” that space.
