Learn from 10 Shiga specialty product e-commerce sites on how to create a website that sells

Hello, this isKototsuki Design.

Rice paddies spread around Lake Biwa, water fills the area in spring, green rice sways in the wind in summer, and turns golden in autumn. On that same land, cattle are carefully raised by human hands. Living in Shiga, such scenery is almost commonplace.

Because it's so natural, it's hard for outsiders to see it. The time producers spend heading to rice fields and barns early in the morning, the care they've spent years on their maintenance, and the passion they put into 'our taste.' If such things only reach people near the sales floor, I think that's a real waste.

That's where e-commerce sites come in handy. However, 'setting up a system to sell online' and 'selling properly' are two different things. In this article, we've organized the important things when creating an e-commerce site for specialty products, looking at data and 10 sites in Shiga that are currently in operation.

The era of selling specialty products online through numbers

The e-commerce rate for food is still 4.52%.

According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's "FY2024 Market Survey on E-commerce" (published August 2025), the market size for food, beverages, and alcoholic beverages is 3.1163 trillion yen (+6.36% year-on-year). Among merchandise sales, it is a major category alongside clothing and home appliances.

What's interesting is the e-commerce adoption rate. While overall merchandise sales account for 9.78%, food, beverages, and alcoholic beverages account for 4.52%. This means that more than half of shopping is still done in stores. Conversely, food is a genre with significant room for growth.

Omi Beef is a geographical indication brand with a history of about 400 years

Omi beef was registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) on December 15, 2017. With a production history of about 400 years, it is counted among Japan's three major wagyu cattle. The registered production standards state that it is a black-haired Japanese breed and that it is "the longest-breeding and the last breeding area in Shiga Prefecture."

There is a proper definition for the name "Omi beef." This definition serves as important information for e-commerce sites.

The production areas of Omi rice are affected by the weather each year

Shiga Prefecture's rice (staple food) crop in 2025 will have a planted area of 29,300 hectares, a harvest of 148,000 tons, and a crop condition index of 105. Meanwhile, the 2023 crop has decreased to 126,900 tons. This is an increase of about 20,000 tons (about 17%) from 2023 in 2025.

Harvest volume fluctuates by nearly 20% each year. The reason systems like "new rice reservation sales" and "annual reservations" are useful in rice e-commerce is because of these local production conditions.

How are Omi beef and Omi rice delicious?

The most important message on an e-commerce site is, in the end, "how did you like it?" However, taste impressions vary from person to person. Here, we will trace the "reasons for their deliciousness" confirmed from official documents step by step.

Omi Beef | Fat that melts in your mouth and the growth of rice straw

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' GI registration information, Omi beef is characterized by its high content of oleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid with a low melting point, and its lipid dissolution in the mouth easily. The sensation of fat melting smoothly in the mouth is supported by these properties.

There are also distinctive ways of raising them. Shiga Prefecture, where the cattle are produced, is blessed with the abundant water of Lake Biwa and is known for thriving rice cultivation, and it is explained that 'the fattening techniques for Omi cattle have developed mainly by feeding rice straw.' The blessings of the rice fields are connected to the growth of the cattle. The fact that rice and cattle are connected within the same land is a unique story of Shiga.

And about 400 years of history. During the Edo period, eating beef was prohibited, but it is said that only the Hikone Domain allowed beef production as offerings to the shogunate. In 1951 (Showa 26), Japan's first branded beef promotion organization, the "Omi Beef Cattle Association," was established. This is a taste refined over a long period.

Omi Rice | Evaluation of 'Special A' and Varieties That Withstand the Heat

You can also check the deliciousness of rice in the 'Rice Taste Ranking' by the Japan Grain Inspection Association. Specialized evaluators compare it with the standard rice and evaluate six categories: appearance, aroma, taste, stickiness, firmness, and overall evaluation, with the highest grade being 'Special A.'

In the 2025 crop, Shiga Prefecture's 'Mizukagami' received a Special A award. This is the third consecutive year, and the eighth time overall. Furthermore, 'Kiramizuki,' which was exhibited for the first time as a reference variety, also received Special A awards for the first time.

Mizukagami is a new variety developed in fiscal year 2012, and Shiga Prefecture introduces it as "an excellent taste that also prevents brown rice from turning white or cloudy even in recent high temperatures." Even as hot summers increase, it grows into beautiful rice. This is a feature that delights both the producer and the eater.

"Delicious" is written in the words of the business owner.

Up to this point, it's within the scope that can be confirmed through official documents. On e-commerce sites, in addition to that, we want businesses to write about the "deliciousness" that only the business owners know.

  • The aroma when grilled, the sweetness of the fat, and the texture when you bite into it.
  • The freshly cooked steam, the way the grains rise, and whether they taste good even when cooled,
  • The most delicious way to enjoy it, recommended portion sizes, and doneness
  • A realization of "What makes our cows and rice different"

Numbers and authentication create 'trust,' while the words of the business owner create 'I want to try it.' I think a page that combines both is the strongest.

Three Benefits of Selling Local Specialties on E-commerce Sites

1. Expand your trade area nationwide

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' Household Consumption Survey (for households with two or more people, August 2026), 54.9% of households use online shopping. The household spending per household was 51,110 yen per month (+2.6% compared to the same month last year). We live in an era where more than one in two households shops online regularly.

Both Omi beef and Omi rice are products that pair well with gifts or mail orders. Moreover, about 77% of visitors to Hachimanbori are from outside the prefecture (according to Shiga Prefecture's tourism statistics). People who come to Shiga, eat it, and like it can buy it even after they leave. The EC site connects you to encounters that would otherwise end in just the store.

The e-commerce rate for food was 4.52%, less than half of the total 9.78% of merchandise sales. Since the habit of "buying online" has not yet fully spread, there is room for this store to become the preferred choice going forward.

Reference: Statistics Bureau, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications | Household Consumption Survey / Shiga Prefecture | FY2024 Shiga Prefecture Tourism Statistics Survey Report

2. Carefully convey the background of the product

At the store, staff have limited time to explain. On an e-commerce site, you can post the scenery of the production area, the producers' thoughts, cultivation methods, production methods, and even recommended ways to eat them.

A survey of people with experience using food e-commerce (Otoriyose Net, December 2025, 306 people) found that 70% cited 'the product images looked delicious' and 'the reviews gave high ratings' to 43% as reasons for purchase. Appearance and customer feedback are reasons for buying. Additionally, 64% of people have used food e-commerce via social media (compared to 54% the previous year), with Instagram being the most common source at 65%.

For those living far away, Omi beef is "a single product," but for the maker, it represents years of time. Share a little of that time with the person on the other side of the screen. That way, you create a "reason to choose" that can't be compared by price alone.

*This survey targeted users of Otoriyose Net, with about 77% of respondents being women. This may differ from the overall trend in Japan.

Reference: Otoriyose Net (Island Co., Ltd.) | Survey on Ordering (2025)

3. Buy it whenever and whenever you like

In the same survey, 62% of people use food e-commerce as "gifts for family or friends," and 58% as "as a reward for themselves." There are similar choices for gifts and for rewards.

Regardless of business hours or store location, you can keep your shop open at night while you're looking for a gift for that person. If you prepare noshi, specify delivery dates, and gift wrapping, you can respond to the giver's feelings.

The experience of selecting local products online is already very familiar. According to a survey by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the amount received from hometown tax donations in fiscal year 2024 was approximately 1.2728 trillion yen (as introduced in the previous section).

*Sales coverage and delivery conditions may vary depending on the business operator's management system.

What to value on a specialty product e-commerce site

Photos become the gateway to "wanting to try it."

When it comes to food, the impression of the photo greatly influences sales. It looks delicious, the texture is conveyed, and it makes you want to give it as a gift. Before creating a beautiful website, you need a photo that makes people want to try it or give it to someone.

Kototsuki Design We also accept website and e-commerce site production, including photography. If you think about photos and design separately, the atmosphere tends to fall out of sync later.

About 70% of people who add their shopping carts leave without buying anything

According to an average of 50 surveys compiled by the Baymard Institute, the abandonment rate of online shopping carts (carts) is 70.22%. Seven out of ten people who add carts leave without buying.

So, why do they leave? Looking at the reasons, the most common reason was "excessive additional costs (shipping, taxes, fees)" at 40%. Next were delivery being too slow at 20%, unreliable card information at 19%, account creation prompted at 18%, long or complicated checkout at 17%, and site errors at 17%.

This is a U.S. survey, so it doesn't necessarily apply directly to Japanese e-commerce. Still, it's important to note that most reasons for users leave are things the site creator can fix, such as 'shipping fees come at the end,' 'membership registration is required,' or 'long procedures.'

Expressing our commitments and background in words

Not only price and quantity, but also Omi beef's commitment to breeding and quality, and Omi rice's commitment to origin and cultivation. We turn what the business values into words and designs that convey to customers. This is the "reason to buy."

What matters here is not just about using grand words. Everyday phrases that pop up during interviews, like "This rice field has been in my grandfather's generation" or "In snowy years, mornings in the cowshed are the coldest at night." Stories like those tend to stay in the hearts of our customers. We start by listening to their stories.

It's also essential to imagine the dining table of the person who will eat it. If it's a gift, imagine what kind of face the recipient will have. If it's for a home visit, imagine what kind of evening your family will have. The product page is also a place to help people imagine those moments.

Key points of design and operation unique to food e-commerce

Delivery and ordering system tailored to products

The necessary mechanisms for food vary depending on the product.

  • Delivery methods such as refrigerated, frozen, or room temperature
  • Shipping fees and setting delivery regions
  • Preferred delivery date, gift wrapping, noshi
  • Pre-order sales and seasonal limited product sales
  • Inventory and order management

Omi beef mainly involves temperature control during freezing and refrigeration, and since Omi rice is heavy, planning shipping costs and pre-selling new rice are important. It is necessary to consider a system that allows for smooth continuation according to the characteristics of the product and the operator's management methods.

Information you can buy with peace of mind, clearly understood

When buying food online, customers care about "what kind of products will arrive" and "when they will arrive." Place product information, shipping conditions, return/cancellation policies, and business details where you can find them without searching. Mail-order sales require labeling based on the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions, and food has rules for food labeling. What needs to be checked varies depending on the products handled and sales methods, so be sure to check before publishing.

10 Selected E-commerce Sites for Shiga's Specialties | How Are They Presented Now?

From here, we actually looked at 10 e-commerce sites that handle Shiga's specialties. This is not a ranking. Each store creates its site based on its own circumstances and feelings. We have summarized the information confirmed on the homepage along with the parts that convey those feelings (as of October 2026). The content may change. "Cannot be confirmed" means that the homepage could not be checked, but does not mean that the feature does not actually exist.

They report the year's yield in their own words. Such 'newsletters' help bring rice buyers closer together. Each order is limited to 20kg, and to prevent resale, bulk orders may be declined. 10 Observations from Visiting Sites

The entry point for gifts is divided by "budget" and "occasion."

On the Omi Beef website, Sennaritei, Morimura Shokai, and Niku no Gen-san made it possible to find gifts by budget. I think this is because many people think about "how much to give" and "in what situation" before deciding "what to give." It's easier to choose by matching the customer's search style than by product name.

Strong in showing "which cow and rice it is"

Our own farms, contract farms, 53 individual identification numbers and designated farms, with an annual purchase volume of 380 tons. On farmers' rice sites, we see inspection results, taste scores, and cultivation methods. Every site shows the products "where, by whom, and how" with numbers and certification. This information is the most convincing for specialty products.

It seems best to show the shipping rules early

The number one reason for cart abandonment was additional costs (40%). Biwako Omi Beef Online offers free shipping on Honshu orders over 1,550 yen and 12,000 yen, as shown on the homepage. Sennaritei's feature on 'products with shipping included' follows the same philosophy. Being able to see the total amount before buying gives peace of mind.

Payment options make shopping easier

Amazon Pay was confirmed on three sites: Sennaritei, Niku no Okayama, and Biwako Omi Beef Online Store. Some sites also support PayPay. K-Farm added credit card payment in its November 2024 renewal. The more payment options available, the more customers can purchase using the method they are most comfortable with.

Subscription services still have room to grow.

From what we looked at this time, only two sites confirmed subscription and annual reservations were Biwako Omi Beef Online and Shimada Farm. Rice pairs well with regular purchases, and considering that harvest yields vary year by year, the reservation system benefits both producers and customers.

Multilingual and international support is coming from now on

Only Taneya supported three languages. In 2024, there were 28,134 foreign tourists in Omihachiman City. This is still about 0.6% of the total, but it has increased since the previous year. E-commerce products that are purchased after returning home are well-suited for inbound tourism. However, before translating, you need to decide "which country's customers will deliver, what, and how" (details will be discussed later in the section "Options for delivering to overseas customers").

The option of delivering to overseas customers

Omi beef and Omi rice are brands that are also recognized overseas. However, it's not about simply adding English to a domestic e-commerce site and selling it as is. First, let's organize the numbers and the rules you should follow.

Food exports hit record highs for 13 consecutive years

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, exports of agricultural, forestry, and fishery products and food in 2025 will reach 1.7005 trillion yen, a 12.8% increase from the previous year. This marks 13 consecutive years of growth and the highest ever. By product category, beef, green tea, and rice have also reported record highs.

According to preliminary figures from January to June 2025, beef exports amounted to approximately 32.6 billion yen (+15.5% year-on-year), and rice exports were about 6.8 billion yen (+22.6%), excluding aid rice.

There is also a market for cross-border e-commerce. According to a survey by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the amount Chinese consumers purchased from Japanese businesses was 2.6372 trillion yen (+8.5% year-on-year). Overseas customers buying Japanese products online has already reached a large scale.

However, beef and rice are not products that can be "shipped as is"

Rules for shipping food overseas vary by country and product. For example, the following are available.

  • Beef: For the U.S., the "slaughterhouse" and "meat processing facility" handling the exported beef must be certified by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. After certification, the U.S. Department of Agriculture will also be notified. Since conditions vary by country, please first confirm the requirements of the country you want to export.
  • Rice: For rice milling for China, submission of plant quarantine certificates and polishing at designated rice milling plants are required. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' Q&A states that brown rice is not allowed, and rice milling that does not meet the requirements cannot be shipped by hand luggage, mail, or international courier (information as of March 2021).
  • Standards for tariffs and pesticide residues also vary by country of export.

In other words, for overseas sales, before you create a site, you need to decide who and how to ship the product to that country. If you skip this and just build a multilingual site, you might end up unable to send the product after the order is placed.

Reference: Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries | Certification of Facilities Handling Beef Exports to the U.S. / Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries | Q&A on Rice Polishing Exports to China

There are three main ways to deliver overseas.

How to Deliver

What it's suitable for

Things to be careful about

Multilingual in-house e-commerce and direct overseas shipping

Products with relatively easy-to-understand rules for international shipping, such as snacks and processed goods

We design international shipping costs, customs duties, quality during delivery, and return handling in-house.

Opening a store in cross-border e-commerce malls and services

First, when you want to test overseas reactions

Fees and customer acquisition mechanisms need to be checked for each service

Passing through export trading companies and local importers

Products such as beef and rice that require quarantine or certification

The profits on hand for businesses and how they present their brands change depending on the agreements with the other party.

For products with many regulations, such as beef and rice, the third method, 'passing through export trading companies,' is often more practical (in our estimation, depending on the destination and product). In such cases, the e-commerce site plays a more important role as a place to introduce the brand to overseas buyers and tourists rather than a place to sell.

Things to do on the site

  • English product names, descriptions of "Omi Beef" and "Omi Rice," and map of the production area
  • English versions of GI (Geographical Indications) and producers' stories
  • Clearly state the concepts regarding countries where you can and cannot send to shipping fees, and customs duties.
  • Overseas Inquiry Form (English)
  • Confirm currency display and whether overseas credit cards can be used for payment

In 2024, 28,134 foreign tourists visited Omihachiman City. This is a site where people who come to Shiga and eat come back to look for it after returning home. For overseas visitors, I think it's a good idea to start with that kind of distance.

What we sell is not just "products"

As I mentioned at the beginning, hometown tax donations have exceeded 1 trillion yen. We believe that behind this is a desire to support the land and deliver something to places with connections (these are not numbers, but our estimates).

Local specialties are woven into the scenery of the land, the lives of the makers, and the changing seasons. What the e-commerce site delivers is not just meat and rice, but also the air of Shiga beyond that. When it reaches that point, customers will want to buy it again.

Kototsuki Design Creating an EC Site Featuring Specialty Products

A specialty product e-commerce site is not just a place to display products. It is a place where the background of the product is created and the creator's dedication is conveyed. We value the following:

  • Directly convey the appeal of the product itself
  • Putting the Thoughts of Producers and Business Operators into Words
  • Never giving up on design or ease of use
  • From filming to post-release operations, we look ahead
  • Choose a system tailored to the challenges and objectives of the business operator

One example of creating an EC site is Taiyo Coffee's EC site. Together, we will develop a site not only to sell products but also to increase the brand's fan base.

Delivering the appeal of Shiga's specialties through an e-commerce site

The e-commerce adoption rate for food is still 4.52%. It's a genre with room for growth. However, about 70% of people who add it to their shopping cart leave without buying anything. The number one reason is additional costs like shipping, and there are many things that can be fixed by setting up the site.

Looking at the 10 active Shiga sites, there were various innovations in ease of finding gifts, how to showcase origins and producers, clear shipping and payment fees, and systems for subscriptions and overseas support. And nowhere remains room for growth.

Delicious products grown by the lakeshore, and the daily lives of those who nurture them. To deliver that appeal to those who need it, e-commerce sites are an option. If you want to sell local specialties like Omi beef or Omi rice online, or if you want to review your current e-commerce site, please feel free to consult with us.
